LESSONS LEARNED
JH and I decided that to pursue a project of this magnitude meant we must embrace failure. Period. As a result, we adopt the mindset of learners first and foremost. We want to create an environment where students take risks and value the journey of learning.
One huge factor that we accounted for was MANAGEABILITY; however we didn't expect the VOLUME of data produced each day. There is an interesting social dynamic going on when each individual holds an iPad...the need to add their personal touch to the device. The ease and accessibility of the iPad's design led to voluminous content being created.
This led to several issues:
1. How do we handle the volume of data that is produced?
SOLUTION:
2. How do we keep track of iPads when kids forget which one they were using (background constantly
change and is encased in an OtterBox ).
SOLUTION: We used numbers for the background and the lock screen.
3. How to keep kids from rearranging and downloading apps, even if free.
SOLUTION:
4. How do we manage the drive to personalize... this needs to be recognized!
SOLUTION:
5. How do we prevent the deletion or editing of other's work as well as instill trust and responsibility for a device we all share?
SOLUTION: A paradigm shift is needed as we move from the "MTLSD universe of logins and
accountability" to a shared device with instantaneous creation yet anonymity (this requires a shift for both institution and teacher)
6. Recording video and/or taking pictures of others without permission.
SOLUTION:
7. Posting under someone else's identity
SOLUTION:
8. What assumptions do we make as teachers about expectations and abilities? Conversely, how do we handle the situation where kids bring the unexpected? perhaps they outpace our abilities/expectations?
