Spoken Word Project + Film Festival |
Directions
- Teams should have a name.
- Here are some suggested roles:
- Performer... this person's role is to perform the spoken word piece
- Videographer... this person's role is to capture and edit video
- Musician... this person's role is to create musical background (if applicable)
- Writer... this person's role is to create the written word
- Here are some suggested roles:
- Select an essential question from the chapter (or, select a concept). Your spoken word video should demonstrate an understanding of the content (by answering the essential question). Use the bullet points to help focus your work.
- Research your topic. Collaborate with team members.
- Create a spoken word performance (Remember, spoken word could be poetry, a monologue, storytelling, a musical performance, etc)
- Capture the performance on video, or create a music video. I suggest using a storyboard to organize your video.
- Publish your final piece on the "Final Products" wikipage
Interdisciplinary Connections:
This is a tough one.... I know I am excited about making the awards more individualized and using molds to cast the medals, I may have said 'slip molds' or maybe just 'molds' for the trophies? Mr. Hain, the new art teacher on the block, has been very successful with casting and has made a dozen from a single clay sculpture.
If you get me near the beginning of the year, and have some students give me input in the design, we can make a truly distinctive trophy and even use golden glaze - these will be of a much higher quality and we can make any number of them! Cool, I love having some part of this project, Mr. Hessler Art Teacher |
Bullying: Stop It On The Spot
How We Made Our PSA
What was the project?
Mellon Middle School students participate in a 20 minute "Tuesday Talk" every other Tuesday throughout the school year as part of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program. Each Tuesday, a lesson is offered to teachers to discuss the issue of bullying with their students. My home room students decided to focus their energies this year on creating PSAs for their school community. Everything was filmed, recorded, and edited on an iPad using Garageband, iMovie, and the camera app (However, this 16:25 minute short film was created using Adobe software and the brainstorming took place on paper).
For the final Tuesday Talk session, I was asked by my Assistant Principal to showcase the students' creation. I took it one step further by creating a 16 minute short film aimed at both students and staff. It was aired in all classrooms via television during that final Tuesday Talk. For students, they had an opportunity to not only see the final product, but more importantly, how my home room students defined a problem, worked collaboratively towards a solution, and created a final product for a specific audience. For teachers, I visually laid out Mr. Vlcek's 7 step framework with examples of our work. If interested, teachers can use it to create PSAs in next year's Tuesday Talk sessions. This framework can also be used to create short films across all content areas as well. Teachers are busy people and in 12 minutes, they have everything they need to create a short film with students.
The 2 minute PSA can be found both at the beginning and end of this short film which focuses on the whole process.
What did I like about the project?
Rather than being passive receivers of content/information, the students posed themselves a problem and took an active role in getting their voice/ideas out to the larger school community. An outside expert was consulted. From that conversation, we implemented his "7 steps in creating short films":1) brainstorming, 2) assigning roles (director, cinematographer, actor), 3) storyboarding, 4) script writing, 5) filming, 6) editing, and 7) presenting. These skills are transferable to all classrooms and life situations. I also liked that students and myself were equals throughout this process. It was fun discovering and creating with them.
And another thing...
Remember, my goal was to create a short, visual learning tool for the busy lives of my peers. Since the video aired, I was stopped many times in the hallways, at copiers, in the small chit-chat before meetings.
